Collaboration can offer substantial benefits to packaging companies. The process allows brand owners, retailers and manufacturers to share best practice, operational and consumer insights, which, in turn, results in market-leading packaging innovation that is truly fit for purpose. LINPAC understands the importance of collaborating with others on new product development and sees it as a primary factor in succeeding within the highly competitive packaging sector.
By working together, new levels of creativity can be reached as team members are challenged to think outside the box and bring new, forward-thinking ideas to the table. In addition, innovation and experimentation are naturally encouraged as part of a collaborative project. A pack that has materialised as a result of the process is also likely to achieve a wider reach, due to two or more companies being involved in the design and development.
Here, we look at four great collaborations we’ve worked on this year:
The naturally appealing one
LINPAC recently developed a variety of designs for its Rfresh® Evolve rigid VSP trays in collaboration with print partner, Parkside Flexibles. The bespoke designs, including kraft paper, grass, wood and slate look, were printed by Parkside and laminated to LINPAC rPET trays during the thermoforming process. The eye-catching designs tap into the current trend for natural-look packaging by enhancing the shelf-appeal of fresh meat and fish. Partnering with Parkside for this project has enabled LINPAC to innovate one of its core products and bring it up to date improving its relevance to future market trends.
The wow factor one
In collaboration with Young’s Seafood and Parkside Flexibles, LINPAC developed a modified atmosphere, printed fish pack. The unique design features newspaper print on both the film lid and tray to create a nostalgic, ‘modern-retro’ feel, that emulates the traditional paper newspaper wrapping associated with takeaway fish and chips. An important aspect of this project was to create a complete pack solution with a seamless look, which was only made possible by working closely and exchanging expertise between the companies.
The preservative and protective one
At the start of this year, LINPAC and Graphic Packaging International teamed up to create a range of premium patisserie cartons, which are ideal for cakes, cream buns, gateaux and pastries. Graphic Packaging used its expertise to create the carton board trays whilst LINPAC produced the compatible crystal clear rPET lids for the four pack styles, providing a complete pack solution for suppliers. The packs meet the needs of the bakery sector and consumers in terms of convenience, appearance and added value. The partnering of plastic and carton board companies has enabled the pair to produce a product that is convenient, efficient and cost effective with enhanced presentation and visibility.
The waste reducing one
Tesco, Cargill and LINPAC came together in July to launch a new perforated split pack for poultry that addresses two leading consumer concerns - portion control and food waste. The MAP tray splits into compartments, allowing consumers to store the food in individual portion-sized packs. This is a great example of how companies can work together to help limit the amount of food that is wasted and sent to landfill. The initial idea for the packs came from consumer based research carried out by Tesco, which highlighted the need for portion control in poultry trays to help reduce food waste in the home.
